Yamaha Midnight Silverado Review

I ride a 2004 Yamaha Midnight Silverado 1700 cc's and 750 lbs.

It's heavy but after I dropped it a couple of weeks ago, I found it quite easy to pick back up. Well balanced.
Has been reliable bike, after a minor carb problem at delivery. It's big and can cruise all day. Gas milage is ok.
Only thing that bothers me about the bike is engine noise. Not exhaust, "engine noise". Almost sound like piston slap on exceleration.
There's also a 'tweeter' sound at 55 MPH. (only way I can discribe it

).
Other than these minor annoyances, I love the bike.

Can you describe the noise a little better? Is it a tink tink type noise - which would indicate a loose valve. Or more of a thumping - which may actually be a piston or cylinder out of round that is slapping.

It's a "tink tink type noise", but quite rapid, at 55 only.
Both have been present since I bought it new in '04. I've had no problems,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yet.

Still might be worthwhile to get the valves checked... have they ever been done?

Nope. Haven't had to touch the engine at all. Damn dealer is so expensive around here, I'd have to take out a loan for him to check it out.

Soooooooo, I've been living with it. Hasn't seemed to affect anything.

valves aren't due to be checked until the 16000 mile mark so if you're not there yet, they should be ok, but the sound you're describing is indicative of valve noise. your dealer shouldn't be charging you much more than an hour's work to check and adjust, a small price to pay just to make sure

Considering a loose valve could potentially hit the piston, will wear faster, and will cause damage to the cams I'd suggest that you get it looked at. As it would be cheaper then buying a new engine.

But wouldn't it make that noise all the time? Why only at 55? Go faster it stops. Go slower it stops. I'm assuming its the RPM not the speed so why only at that RPM?
