Howdy from a Texan in Iraq

#1 Unread post by macktruckturner »

So I just found this place, and after an hour or three (basically all of today's free time) I've gotta say this is one of the best forums I've found period! Sane advice, I particularly like the thread about 600cc Supersports as first bikes. I've seen more than my share of mangled bodies caused by such over zealous head first jumps (or dumps rather) into unprepared riding.

I'm not going to claim to be the next Rossi, truth be told, I haven't ridden on the street in a decade (and I'm 21, so tell me I've made some bad choices before!) I did my fair share of off road riding as a kid in West Texas, after which I moved to Malaysia, and evidently lost my mind in more than a few respects - one of which included riding around a 125cc Suzuki scooter thing (you know the type, long seat, basket up front, but not quite a Vespa.. still had 5 gears, and big wheels.) I'm not sure I'd drive a truck in .my were I to find myself there again, but the past is the past. After I moved back to the States, I didn't get to ride, but it was always on my mind.

Fast forward, 8+ years later - I'm in Iraq. It's about 120 degrees out if anyone's wondering, but hey I finally have the means to get a bike of my own! R&R comes in August, and I'll be buying an SV650 in short order. Here's to hoping I can pick up some good banter, and information on this site - it looks promising so far.

Anthony, aka truck, aka SPC Martinez ;)

Anthony, first and foremost - Thank you for your service. We owe our freedom to you and the rest of those in the military. :notworthy:

The SV 650 will plaster a smile on your face so wide not even a drill Sergeant in a bad mood could wipe it off. Enjoy getting re-acquainted with riding, and keep posting!

Thanks guys. I'm hoping the SV does exactly what you say it will - but then it has two wheels, and an engine - how could it not :) I'll be starting a thread or two in the new biker forum, just to see if I'm still tracking logically, but now I must sleep.

Thanks, getting my SV is about the only thing keeping me motivated right now. Just two months, and I'll get to go home and buy the first bike I can call "mine"! I will definately be taking pictures, lots, and lots of pictures. Thanks for the link, but I have my own server already (in a past life I was a network admin.. then I enlisted).

I'm not sure if it's of any interest, but here's the pictures I've taken thus far in Iraq (and Kuwait) http://www.truck-web.us/gallery/OIF3

As a Desert shield/Desert Storm Veteran Nowadays, it takes a lot of courage from a young man like yourself doing our great country a favor. We will look forward to seeing you on the road as soon as you return. What's your six and take care.

Hey there, nice to hear your thinking of getting a SV650. I just got a SV650S and Im lovin it. Im learing how to ride at the moment, but I can say its very forgiving. Put some frame sliders on it and your set to go.

Be safe out there and come back in one piece.
