1984 Yamaha XT--250 Valve adjustment

I do not have any tech manuals for this machine How are these engins to set and check valve clearance? I have the tank off and just got this used 13,000 miles with NO history . Leave well enough alone till I see how it runs Or check the setting now??? And how? :cry:
