Electric Starter

I have 1981 Yamaha xs400 with electric and kick start the kick start works fine but the eletric start doent work at all i found that the wire runs down behind a plate were the shifter pedal is and there blue wire that is not conected to anything it looks like it might be the starter but if just conect it to with a screw will that make the starter work or is there somthing else that needs to be done

You should have a wire that leads from the positive terminal to the solenoid, from the solenoid to the starter, from the starter to the ground.

Then a wire that connects to solenoid to the negative terminal. If any one of these is disconnected, the starter will not work. All are about 8-10 guage wire, and should come colored red or black as standard.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
