I have an '82 Honda with what appears to be the original chain. As you can imagine it is pretty old and grimey. Ive been keeping it lubed well, but I checked the tension yesterday and its past the 1" limit of chain freeplay. I have a feeling ill need to replace it soon.
Its a old-school standard chain, can I replace it with a modern o-ring chain?
Anyone know about how much $$$ it would cost me for a shop to put on a new chain and sprockets? (ball park estimate)
New chain and sprockets....

Is your chain tension adjustment at it's max? If not, just adjust and start looking for a future chain replacement aftermarket or used. If not already packed in grease, just store in clean oil pan w/cover.
With a bike of your age, if you don't already have a tire source, you should start looking for one that has your tires. Don't buy and then store, just locate where you can get them for when its time.

Yes, you should be able to replace it with a o-ring chain. Don't skimp on the price, though. You get what you pay for when it comes to chains. Expect to pay around $130 just for the chain. And always replace the chain and sprockets as a set. Never one at a time. Our shop charges a hour and a half for this job @ $70/hour. The sprocket prices vary. GET aftermarket, a hell of a lot cheaper. And go steel...not aluminum.
CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE REGULARLY!!!
