Yet another lady joining up, and just popped in to say hi

Don't have a bike yet, I got bit by the BUG early last year and unfortunately in Ohio you have to sign up for the Motorcycle riding Course like a year in advance....literally....and I missed it

BUT

I want to ride SO BAD I have already picked out my first bike:

Honda Shadow VLX. I'm a cruiser kind of girl and I just love the look of this little bike. Cruisers are my favorites, followed by choppers and big tourings. I LOVE Goldwings...and I want one but it'll be a few years before I know I can handle one.

I started looking at scooters last year, to be honest, since my commute is less than 10 minutes, there's no point in me driving a big old car around...especially since everything I need (mall, grocery store, music store, gaming store....hmm...what else is there? oh...work yea) is within 15 minutes from me. Especially with the gas prices as they were (If I knew then about the gas prices...what I know now...I'd walk to work...and I drive a small asian car with great gas mileage I can't IMAGINE what those other people pay...). Then I started noticing there's a lot of motorcycles running around. When my bf and I took a vacation last year, we rented mopeds....the freedom I got from riding a moped was enough to make me think "hey I want this, but with more power" and my bf started telling me about how much he loved riding motorcycles when he was younger. Then boom, I was bitten by The Bug and ever since then, I have to...I MUST own a motorcycle. I've sat on plenty of them, and they always just felt, I don't know, comfortable. I can "see" myself on one, owning one, and loving it.

Anyway, enough rambling, I love this site, and the people sound so helpful (been lurking since last year :p) and since I'm getting serious with the bike search, I thought I'd might as well come on in!

I'm not sure to be honest. I'm planning everything for next Summer, but I'm going to keep calling the place every weekend to see if I can get in. I refuse to purchase a bike and just ride it around until I get the training. I might have to give up on the regular course and take one from one of the other places that are offering it. It's more expensive (like $500 as opposed to $20) but it's worth it to get it done.

We have no subsidized lessons here in Canada. We pay for our own classes. It is worth it.

I wish we could do that. It's so hard to find and get into a class without having to fork over $800 and a long trip 2+ hours to get into one here in Ohio. Even though we don't really have a long season to ride in. I hate to jut purchase a bike and learn by myself (with books, DVD's etc) but it's next year for sure. My bf somewhat knows how to ride but we have a friend that does and is dying for us to join him. Imagine, 2 sport bikes (him and my bf) and me, a cruiser, riding together on weekends

I have experience with teaching myself (I go to an online college) but I'm scared to pick up a bike without proper training. Getting into the "experienced" bike riding course is a lot easier than just the beginner one so that's an option too...hmm

I hired a private instructor. It cost a bit more, but he was able to fit me in to suit my schedule. Can you find a private instructor? Sometimes the instructors at the schools will do private instruction outside of the school program.

Weee I found another place that offers training ...and it's actually not that expensive! $250 for 1 full week on 500cc Buell Blast bikes (gotta go look those up) and they're NOT full I...might be taking the class sooner than I expected

Go ahead and get on the list for the BRC. Show up at the first session of each class. Have all your paperwork in hand. If someone does not show up, they will fill the opening and you may get in. Check to see if there is more than one location near you. Get on all the lists possible.

Try the Harley dealerships. Their "Rider's Edge" program is the MSF program with a few extras thrown in. It costs around 250-300 bucks but you get to ride newer Buell Blasts and they even cater lunch on the riding days. Since it costs more than the the state sponsored MSF program, it's easier to get into.

They will also try to influence you to buy a Harley, but you don't have to and they don't bug you too much about it.
