I enjoy riding with and without helmets / gear. I usually only ride without helmets on short trips around the corner. I would say helmets improve your visibility at highway speeds above 60 mph or so due to the wind protection they provide. And if you are ever caught in even a minor rain shower with no helmet you have virtually no choice other than to pull over and park, the rain impacting your face makes concentration on driving almost impossible.
Where I live (Houston), I would say about 30% of the cruiser drivers I see wear helmets, and about 70-80% of sport bike drivers.
it just freaks me out!!

My fullface has enough chips, gouges, and scrapes from rocks, bugs, and debris impacting it at highway speeds that I have no interest in not wearing a helmet!
Just today I took a chunk of something off a cement truck that I was passing in the cheek while doing 100kmh :O. I don't know if it was dried cement or a rock, or what, but I bet that would have drawn blood if not for the helmet.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
