My bike's a single, so I don't see much point in an aftermarket pipe (just makes a crap sound even louder).
And I use earplugs on every ride to begin with because wind roar makes it so procreating hard to concentrate, so loud pipes would just negate the plugs.
Might reconsider though if i had a nice parallel or V twin.

I don't see a louder pipe as a replacement for a horn, but it's good to make a little more noise then normal. I mean come on, you already have a cloaking device on, so whats wrong with being a little louder. Aside from the fact that aftermarket exhaust sounds better and gives better performace.

I was talking with this guy about his pipes this weekend at Safeway. He said the more noise you make the safer you are. Unless its some kid blasting music so loud it covers the bike noise, most people see or wait to see him.
Really got me thinking about replacing my stock pipes, which are pretty quiet.

My 92 nighthawk has a vance and hines megaphone that I repacked a couple of weeks ago, It took a few times to get the sound where I wanted it but it sounds great now! Not to loud at idle but it it has a deep growl when reved up. My favorite bike sound I ever had though was an sv650s with a two brothers carbon fiber slip on, Something about that V-Twin sound that makes me happy 
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car!
one more thing I would like to add. As for the loud exhaust vs. the horn, Is it me or isn't it better to be heard all the time? I mean should I be riding around honking the horn?
Let's face it, even the loudest pipes aren't all that bad at idle, right? You could baby it off your street and anyone else that has to hear it will only hear it in passing, that would account for a split second.
I have a neighbor that has an old camaro that has cherry bomb header mufflers on it. my windows rattle when he lets it warm up in his driveway. I don't complain.
And like stated somewhere else, all these people with the little four cylinder cars with the 4 inch sewer pipe exhausts systems that sound like a weed whacker on crack and have a stereo that you can hear from a mile away? What about them?
I don't think it is such a big deal but maybe I just have very forgiving neighbors.
I like the louder when reved pipes just to let people know where I am, years of riding has given me the ability to sense when I am not being seen, It dosen't matter where the person is, ahead or behind, let them know where you are.

Sad to hear that DEnver is at it again. Anyone remember the front fender law?? Even though your bike was legal in Colo. you needed a front fender in Denver (only enforcable on streets that are not US or state hiways)
Colo Spgs has noise ord that says 78 dec at 25 foot. Under state statutes older bikes are allowed 82 dec at 50 foot. Meaning that a bike w/stock exhaust is in violation if it is older. You can beat this in court Lawyer cost arround $1500 for a $50 ticket. Then they can write you again and it starts all over.
I think that if Denver or any other township wants to institute laws that are more restrictive than state standards they should only be enforcable on vehichles registered in Denver just like emmissions which is only for the upper Front Range. (El Paso/Pueblo county line North) The city of DEnver seems to think because they are the Capital they should dictate the laws and regs. for not only the metro area (most of which is outside Denver) but the rest of the state as well. They have done this before and will again.

I finally got my Rinehart True Dual pipes with the high performance baffles, along with a Power Commander III ignition module and Big Sucker intake. It souds GREAT. I love. I wouldn't change it for the world. I is pretty quiet at an idle, but if you open the throttle, it will roar. It doesn't have the tinny sound, but a deep throated roar. It is just awesome. What else can I say......
