boots
B est bet is to carry a pair of cheap tennis shoes for walking and boots for riding.
Stay away from steel toes as they are COLD. Instead try to find some OSHA "approved for electrical work". These have balistic nylon toes taht are rated as good as steeltoes. Redwing calls them tech-toes. Adding arround $40USD more than steel.

I just picked up July's issue of Rider magazine and they got a boot buying guild inside. If anything it looks like they cover most of your questions and give a review of about 11 different boots.
I personally have a pair of Icon's that I really enjoy. I wanted something that I could wear to work but still have protection. It covers the ankle and has extra padding around the ankles. Didn't take long to break in and are very comfortable.

I wear the wheat colored Icon Super Duty 2. I really like them. Good protection and comfortable enough to wear off of the bike. I have even forgot to take extra shoes to change into at work and I have wore them all day there.
