First gear clunk?
Mine does this too.
A related question - when I first start the bike, I'll shift from N to first after letting it idle for a bit, and the bike will jump forward a tiny bit. Anyone else have this? Just like, a type of shock, I guess...I don't usually notice it after riding for a little while, I don't think. (If it does happen, it's not noticable.)

Yeah, I get the same as lunchmeat, except my bike doesn't lurch it just gives a good shake (maybe I'm holding the front break?). Well, I guess this pretty much confirms the answer to the OP's question.

When the tranny is in neutral, only one of the two mating gearsets is spinning. The plate/oil drag is more than enough to turn the input shaft, but not the output shaft. Once you drop it into gear (any gear from a stop), the second gearset engages the first one and that clunk is the second shaft and gears matching the input speed from a rotational stop.
First gear is also a big, beefy, numerically high hunka steel, often with teeth and dogs cut for strength rather than shifting smoothness. So re-engaging first from second while moving makes a clunk because your slowing down the second shaft to match the input speed of the first, and re-engaging that big, crude gearset.

you're tranny wont explode, but you will wear down those gears. as I was told, shift it like you mean it. snap that lever hard a fast when going 2nd to 1st. mine will bounce and grind if I wuss out on the lever. snap it hard and it will thunk, and then you are golden, or you could shift in a lower RPM.-regr3t- wrote:I think ive got a pretty serious problem regarding this, sometimes downshifting into first my shift lever kind of bounces or vibrates and it sounds like its grinding before (bounce-bounce-bounce-bounce-bounce-CLUNK) it clunks into first, is my tranny gonna explode soon?
