Ever hit an animal?

I almost hit a deer once. Er, more like the deer almost hit me (she was trying!). Also came very very close to being crapped on by a bird. I actually heard the stuff hit the ground right in front of my tire.

The only animal I ran over besides bugs was on purpose. It was a half-dead squirrel, looked like it had just recently been hit. The back half was tire mushed and the front half was still gasping for air. So I ran over his head.

I've sacraficed a few ground squirrels to the road gods, and I've nearly terminated a couple birds, but nothing bigger fortunately.

I very nearly hit a ruffed grouse today. I came around a corner and there the hen was, motionless in my lane, with two tiny chicks following a pace or two behind. Hard on the binders, I was nearly stopped when one of the little buggers took flight! He darted from right to left directly in front of my headlight. I had no idea those little fellows could fly when that young! Ain't it amazing what you learn on a bike?

Anyway, I did hit an owl once, many years ago. Or rather, he hit me. Naturally it was after dark and he was apparently in pursuit of a particularly tasty flying insect of some sort. You know how the bugs aim for your headlight... well, he must have pulled up at the last second because he beaned me in the forehead. Luckily I had my full-face on so it wasn't too bad... just a "thunk." All I saw was feathers and talons. I sure wouldn't want to get smacked in the face by one without a full-face on...

I hit out insectoid animal friends all of the time. I always seem to hit the big fat ones right in the faceshield right between the eyes.

Is that why most cruiser riders are a bit on the chubby side?

We have 2 main targets here. Deer and gophers. Both are so numerours as to be considered vermin.

Last friday I rode home some 400 miles and hit maybe 15 gophers. The first 2 were by accident, the rest, I was hunting. With the bike upright and going straight I didn't even feel them, unless they were standing up looking at my tire coming at them. I wouldn't care to run one over if the bike was leaned over very far.

I also had very, very, veerry close call with a deer at dusk that same day. The details are not important.... ... I was doing something I shouldn't oughta been doing and there is a whitetail doe out there wondering what kinda big insect went by and slapped her in the nose.

If the wind is not blowing too hard, the bugs are unbelievably thick. Pretty much HAVE to stop every 30-45 minutes to clean your visor, or your riding blind.
