Simple as.http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#Motorcycle wrote:The DMV recommends that you take instruction from a commercial driving school if possible. The DMV recommends that you have at least 30 hours of practice on a motorcycle, with at least 10 hours of practice in medium to high volume traffic before you take your motorcycle road test.

If NY is anything like Maryland, you're gonna need parental consent before you can proceed.
In MD, if you are under 18, you need parental permission first AND, you to take a motorcycle safety course to get licensed.
Oh. You need a CAR license before you can get the motorcycle license. Basic Driver's Education covers all the LAW stuff that you need to know to operate a vehicle on public roads.

Different State but I didn't know anyone with a bike at the time so I used the services of the optional MSF course and used their bikes.
As far as ride time required for license after permit, if you can't make a new friend at MSF school then see if you can pay someone to ride with you. For Gas and a snack, I would go with someone needing a rider for the permit, if someone asked. But I like bikes and talking about them some people are solo riders and solo people.
When I had my permit and could ride, I couldn't, because I did not know anyone that did. Anyway the only way to find someone, is to ask neighbors that do ride, if they would go along if you pay for their gas. Some will and some won't. How bad do you want to ride ?

I am also looking at getting my motorcycle permit... I'm 16 now, so that means I am not able to "upgrade" to the license until I have had the permit for 12 months, according to the Colorado DMV website. I'll be taking the MSF course, however.
My question is, what does a "motorcycle permit" allow you to do? Is it essentially like a regular drivers permit, where you must ride with a designated guardian with you at all times? Accomplish so many hours with another rider? The website really doesn't distinguish any of this...
Didn't want to make a new thread, seeing as this one is basically the same topic...
