Honda Shadow VLX 600 Clutch Problem?

#1 Unread post by dvmahanson »

When I engage the clutch and shift into gear from neutral, the engine dies. Engine runs good and I've tried adjusting the clutch cable at the lever the full range of adjustment and can't seem to solve the problem. Any ideas?

Is it stalling like it's engaging the gear or is it just quitting like you hit the kill switch?

Kickstand/kickstand switch.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

It dies the instant I kick it into 1st gear while the clutch is still engaged. I would say it is like the fuel switch turns off because no matter how you manage the throttle, it dies. If I try to increase the rpm's while I shift, the gear's grind and it doesn't want to shift into 1st.

Seriously, check the kickstand/sidestand kill switch. Is the kickstand down?? Or is the switch sticking?

That's considered a safety feature.

Sev, you're the champ. Thanks so much. I had no idea such a switch existed. It worked. Kickstand down, engine dies. Kickstand up, no problem. Thanks again.

I'm trying to understand what you did so you shifted into first while you had the kickstand down?

Whew, that's good at least. Sometimes the switches stick or break so that the bike does when you go into gear no matter what. That's a bit tougher to diagnose by yourself.
