smaller sprocket - cut a link?

#1 Unread post by The549 »

I just got a smaller rear sprocket, and a new front sprocket and chain. Going from a 41t rear to a 38t rear. Should I punch out a link in my chain? Or three?
thanks

I'd hook it up normally, then see what the adjusters look like. If the chain is way to big then knock a link out.

Most likely you'll need to knock out one or two, but I wouldn't bang it out until I was sure.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

My bike, and I would assume most other bikes have a chain tensioner on either side of the swingarm for the. I would consider adjusting that in between installing the new sprocket and knocking out a link.
