there's a tradition in Russia that before you leave on a trip, after all of the mayhem of packing and organizing, right before you walk out the door and start the journey you stop, sit on your suitcase, and take a minute of quiet so that your head is in the right place for the trip. maybe not a bad idea to work that concept into the pre-ride inspection.
