Valve adjustment

#1 Unread post by Puyopop »

What are the symptoms of a bike needing a valve adjustment is there any way for me to tell withought having to get in there and physically measure the valves?

They'll either be loose and tick... or be tight and make no noise at all.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I would follow the mfg's recommendations and check them if there is any question.

Usually valves wear tighter. The clearances get less over time because the valve is slowly hammering itself in to the valve seat, reducing clearance.

A symptom of a to tight valve is a burnt valve that stops sealing and causes loss of power and compression and sometimes haed damage.

I would measure the clearance, following the manual, if there is any question at all. But I don't like engine damage, but that;s me....

Yeah i really should go have them adjusted then, I wanted to avoid it as the mechanic said that the valves on my bike were hard to get to is that true. 1987 ex250

No idea how hard on your bike.

Nighthawk 750 has self adjusting valves so I never have to adjust.

My CB360 had screw and lock nut, so it was relatively easy.

Im not sure either because all he really told me was they were "Hard to get at" im sure the actual adjustment would be no different.
