EN 500

#1 Unread post by Cockney Rebel »

HI Lads ,
I've just bought a 1990 EN 500 which has been standing for 12 months ,
it only cost me £150 but is a good bike ( perfect for an old fart like me ).
I had a short ride on it but when I got back home I found that the air cleaner was full of oil and leaking out , the engine was still ticking over smoothly so I'm not sure if it is piston rings , I've ordered a long 14mm plug spanner to do a compression test as they plugs are sunk well down in the head. Can you think of any other thing that could cause this loss of oil apart from the rings ?

Smudge :bash:

if its not blowing smoke out the exhaust. it may be a pluged crankcase vent or the bike may have been tipped over while running alowing the fuel to enter the air box.

but typically its exssive crank case pressure causing this. is the oil level in the case to high maybe?
say what

Thanks HUH,
I checked the oil level today and the last owner had over filled the engine by 10 pints ( what a pratt ) , I've got a new filter and plugs on order so it should be great , it runs a bit rough when cold ( it feels like only one choke is working ) but great when it warms up, I'll have to strip the carbs and clean them out.

if it was 10 pints overfull it is most likely gas that has leaked into the crankcase.

Did you mean overfilled it TO 10 pints? It seems unlikely the other way. My son has an en 500, and the crankcase doesn't look big enough to add 1.25 extra gallons. I could be wrong, just wondering. Seems like the cylinders would have to be full of oil, and the bike wouldn's even run.

Just curious. :| 8)

Also, his runs rough when cold, too. Can't get on it for a few minutes without much stumbling. My kz650 warms up faster, but it's air cooled.
Ride safe...God bless!

Hi Ron,
I drained off 10 pints of oil to get it to the right level, the piston must have been pumping up and down through the oil but some how it still ran. It was lumpy when cold but that must have been the oil that had got into the carb, it has now cleared itself and runs fine now . I'm taking it for the MOT ( British Government Road Test ) tomorrow , I only paid £150 around $280 for it last week and it has cleaned up like new and is great to ride ( all my Christmas's have come at once ), I would love to find some more at that price.

keep a watch on the oil level if it starts getting higher on the dipstick it will be gas getting in crankcase.

Thanks. I learned something here. Can't ever discount the value of that. I'm glad it runs right now...Chris really likes his. I ride it once and awhile, and it really is one smooth, powerful cruiser. It really gets up and scoots, and it handles nice and light. You'll like it!

Well my EN 500 had it's big day today and passed the MOT test so I will now be legal on the road ,it was a 40 mile journey and I checked the oil level when I got back and it was still at the correct level. The only problem I have is where to get an oil filter in the UK, none of the big bike factors have it in stock " any ideas ".
