When to Change Oil

#1 Unread post by cyphecks »

I was about to change my bikes oil since it had been about 3000 miles since it was last changed, but when looking through my owner's manual, it was suggested that I change it every 8000 miles. It's an 02 Shadow ACE. Is the manual out of it's mind, or should I listen to it?
Also, if it makes any difference, I am on a road trip doing a lot of miles almost every day. Thanks.

Oil and a new filter are cheap compared to a new engine.

When in doubt, change more often, not less.

I always go between 500 to 1000 miles under what the manual says.

The advice that I've picked up from manufacturers and mechanics is that most modern bikes are perfectly happy having their oil changed at each service interval- so long as you use good quality oil.

I've always followed that rule and never had any problem.

Still, no harm in changing it more often if it concerns you.

The manual usually specifies a time period, IE 8000 miles or 1 year.

So if you don't ride the whole mileage, but use up the time, change it..
