why bikes don't make good getaway vehicles

Because that wouldn't incapacitate the rider and they'd be back where they started. Actually, while he was getting on the bike, I half expected a sniper to take him out. The hostages were clear and they had a good clear shot.
Not only was a perfectly good bike cracked up, so was the side of the police vehicle...not to mention the danger to that police officer.
But, yeah: this way is a lot more dramatic.
