questions for pro riders

after taking youir brc and receiving your M endorsement on your license for motorcycle.... would you recommend to drive your newly purchased bike from the dealership to your home or would it be better to just rent a uhaul truck and take it home that way until I get more practice with the bike..... I should mention that I have never truly ridden a bike before.. not until the basic rider course...

a few questions...

how long ago did you take the brc?

how well did you do?

what would the ride home be like (speed limit, etc.)?

if you can trailor it then you can take your time at your house. but if the ride home isn't that bad and you did well in the course you could just take it slow and have someone follow you in a car.

i think there's a thread on here somewhere about this subject to help newbies out.

i will say, my first ride after the brc, i was pretty nervious until i got on the road. i sat at the end of my driveway for a few minutes before i finally just went for it.

one more question - have you already baught the bike?

i havent taken the brc yet and no havent bought the bike yet and the ride home is about 30 - 45 minutes away and im sure i can avoid going to the highway, so the speed limit will be between 40 - 50 mph. thanks for the input everyone here has been very helpful..

for me, that's so hard to answer. you might take right to it and having a 30 min ride as your first ride might not be that bad. personally, remembering that first ride, i wouldn't want to have to ride a new bike 30-40 min.

also, have you thought about getting something used for your first bike? trust me, you will most likely do something dumb (grab your front brake in a slow turn in the driveway or soemthhing like that) and drop your bike. i would hate to drop a new bike. there are plenty of used starter bikes out there that will hold their value for a season or two while you get your skills down. then go and get something nice and shiny. i was ticked the few times that i've dropped my bike. but it would have been so much worse if it had been in mint shape when it happened. just my two cents.

yeah i will get it used but im purchasing it from the dealership....and thanks for the input.... maybe ill go with my gut feeling and just get a uhaul truck and pactice around my neighborhood first.

When I bought my 1992 750 NIghthawk this past may. I haven't ridden a bike in about 17 years......When I was riding I had at least 6 or 7 different motorcycles over the years.......but at the age of 52, I loaded my new to me mint 750 mid-life crises in the back of my pickup truck.....tied it down real good and drove it home. Once there, I just drove it around the block several times, then up and down the road a few times, then into town (its a very small town population 3,000). And over the summer drove it further and further.......

By bother was in the same siuation and just bought a 2005 V-Star, he has the same riding experience and number of bikes as me....He too rented a U-Haul and took it to get inspected and then U-Hauled it back to his place where he drove it around his block........We both took little steps and built up from there......

Don't push yourself, use a trailer or a friends pickup truck.....just get some good straps!!! and once home......take your time and have fun!!!

Maybe get someone with experience ride with you.....it's fun.....if it has carrier on the back load up a picnic or something weather permitting....
