Please help me choose my first bike...

Hi,
I have never ridden a bike in my life. I want to get one. I am a 23 yr old male weigh 100 lbs and my height is 5'7''. you get idea that i am not so strong . I want to get a bike which won't be too heavy for me to handle. I am nervous because it is gonna be my first bike.

please suggest me what i should consider getting. people told me to get suzuki S40, honda 599 or honda rebel. but those look really big to me as they are 600cc. i think i won't be able to handle it if it starts to tip on its side. but i don't want something too feminine looking either. please help me choose my first bike. i would really appreciate. thanks.

Don't get the 599. It's no beginner bike. The Rebel is actually a 250, not a 600 and would be a fine beginner bike. as would the SSuzuki S40. Sevulturus is a member here, and he started on an S40 (also calles the LS 650 Savage). It is a 650, but it's a single-cylinder, and doesn't overwhelm you with the power. Good luck on your choice, and keep us posted!

A good way to decide what kind of bike you want, by the way is to take the MSF course. They usually have several different styles, so you'll get a chance to try many of them. It will also give you the best start by building your skills and confidence before you hit the streets on your own.

I agree with Toyuzu. I have the 599 and it's a rocket, too much for a beginner. Maybe a V twin of some sort? You have to decide what kind of riding style you like.

I would suggest a used bike for sure. That way if you have a mishap, it won't cost a bundle to repair (and paint/metal scratches won't bother you that much). Once you get used to riding and leaning the bike over in your turns etc.. (BTW...all bikes will lean over when cornering), then consider a newer bike in the 250-500 cc range. As your skills inprove over time, then get the bike of your dreams. You'll more than likely never drop it and will have the confidence to ride as you wish.
