Don't "Respect The Bike" and Yes, it is too big!

#1 Unread post by Dragonhawk »

Two things I still notice a lot on motorcyle forums.

First - newbies posting about huge motorcycles and asking, "Is this too big to start with?"

Cripe.

YES! It is! You already KNOW it is too big. You're just looking for some testosterone-filled nimrods to convince you that you're man enough to handle it. And they will. The macho dorks will support your stupidity from here to eternity.

Stop it. You're already smart enough to know it's too much, or you wouldn't be asking in the first place. Have the self-respect to acknowledge your inability to handle it right now, and get something more manageable.

No one ever asks, "Is the Ninja 250 too big?" or "Is a Honda Rebel too powerful?" Ride one. You'll find out that small motorcycles are already WAY more than you can handle as a newbie. Okay, toughguy?

Second rant: Respect the bike. Another bit of meathead ignorance. As I have written elsewhere - Some will say, "it's the rider, not the bike" and tell you to "respect the bike" and you'll be fine. That is stupid and ignorant advice. The bike is an inanimate object! It doesn't care if you "respect" it or not. What you need to respect and acknowledge are your OWN limitations and lack of skills as a beginner. Take that into account when making your choice. Don't heed innane macho clichés masquerading as insightful wisdom.

Okay. Done ranting. Back to your scheduled websurfing.....

the other thing that is a concern, are countries that have no or very little regulation on large capacity bikes for nubs.

or

they pretend concern by commanding one undertakes some BS course on "how to ride a bike in 1 or 2 easy lessons" then you can go out and buy any RR bike you desire and ride it legally until your inevitable early death. As if some course, and I dont care what you name it, that is conducted in the privacy and confines of a well controlled private property environment, is going to provide you with the skills to ride an R1 in 2 days, 2 months, even 2 years on public roads.

There is something wrong with a system that allows unproven novices to part with their hard earned on a 150hp + race machine.

Unfortunately there are always going to be those fukwits that think its safe to do, and really, If they wanna kill themsleves, well ok, thing that bothers me is, my friends, families and me are using the same roads.

its all good

I think a rebel 250 is too small but then again thats me. For most people, however, it isnt too small. Heck I have been riding the bike in my sig for 2 years now and I feel its too small now. I didnt when I first started though. I thought it was just right.

Thats fair enough what your saying but the bike i ride suits me fine and its not to big to start on. For others its would be, i wouldnt have bought it if i thought that it was 'too big' for me!

A good example.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

I got a nice look at the new Ninja 250. Makes me want to get rid of my Vulcan and get a cheap RR bike.

I started on a bike that was rather large displacement for a first timer. I RESPECTED the might of the machine and did not ride it arrogantly. This cautious RESPECT for an INANIMATE object was why I managed to gradually learn how to handle it, without being in unreasonable danger.
