first bike - 1989 kawasaki zx10r

#1 Unread post by klohiq »

I'm picking it up in a few weeks after I get my gear and take my msf course.

Since it's carbureted...does that mean it's a lot slower than liter bikes that are out today? I drove it a little in a parking lot and it seemed forgiving enough and relatively easy to manipulate the throttle to my liking. Let me get this straight though for those of you who think I'm saying I can handle the bikes limits...I'm definitely not saying anything like that, merely stating that it feels like if I give it enough time and make sure to respect it that I can probably not kill myself on it.

Basically my question is that since it's older is it any easier to ride than bikes like the gsxr1000 and cbr1000rr that are out today...like the brakes, steering and gas feels more forgiving than I imagine the new bikes would...

any tips also on keeping the bike from being too much at first...it's already been geared a little different than stock...I think up a tooth so that it has more top-end...which in my case is probably better since now each gear has a little less low end grunt....maybe?

if the bike scares me too much I'll sell it and get my original choice which was an sv650 or blast

Looks like you've answered all your own questions. Practice in a large parking lot, and get some cones from Wally world. Go to this site for some great exercises, and dimensions for the cones. Practice is all you can do, other than just not ride or trade the bike in. As for how it compares to the new ones...After you learn to ride it you can compare for yourself...Just don't worry about it now, because you have plenty to learn already. Enjoy, be careful, and good luck.
