I use

ccleaner to keep my computer free of ""crumb"" and remove bad registry problems (easier than going through the registry myself and for someone that hasnt messed with the registry before I suggest ccleaner anyways). It also cleans out your temp folder etc etc as well as making it easier to uninstall programs.

avg anti virus cause its free for my anti virus proggy

superantispyware for my spareware proggy cause its free

and O&O degrag to keep my computer defragged.

I have PC Mechanic for the registry. Seems to work well. I have a paid subscription to Norton so it can continue to be the anti virus.

I don't know what a spareware proggy is.

I use Webroot SpySweeper and it seems to work really well, though it is yearly subscription based. I stopped using Norton anything because of the large amount of memory the program takes up, except for Norton 360 or the business versions of their antivirus. I'd rather use BitDefender, Kaspersky or AVG (free). Trend Micro and McAfee are useless.

Yes, get Linux, spyware isn't an issue there, because nothing seems to be designed to run on Linux

Nothing to do huh??? Your right, nothing to do!
You don't have to install an office suite, because your distro probably came with one... so you don't have to do that...
No Spyware or Viruses, so no need to install ad-aware or anti-virus, nothing to do there....

I guess there are things to do though....
Pick between 2 or 3 GREAT web browsers (already installed)
Start listening to your music collection
Point and click install of literally THOUSANDS of free games from FPS to Chess
Burn CDs
Author DVDs
Check Your email on one of MANY available and pre-installed email clients such as thunderbird or evolution
Chat with your frinends on AIM/ICQ/MSN/YAHOO/GoogleTalk/Jabber using one of many integrated clients such as gain or pidgin
Build web pages using GREAT clients such as bluefish or eclipse

So does having linux mean you don't need windows XP or Vista or otherwise
If linux is so great, why are we all buying microsoft?

No...I'm not being a smarta$$.....I genuinely don't know.

Its a complicated subject. Linux is an operating system, just like XP or Vista are operating systems. Linux is based on Open Source software and is completely free for use.

The problem with linux is comfort. People are used to windows (they have 95ish percent of the market share) and linux is a little different. Some things arn't compatable between windows and linux, some things are.

However, at its most basic level, linux is just another OS. If, instead of thinking "I need internet explorer", you think "I need to surf the web", then linux will be no problem.

Linux was also crippled for many years by a lack of user-friendly interfaces. That issue has been almost completely wiped away. My personal favorite flavor of linux, Ubuntu, works very similar to windows in terms of how things work. You click on an icon to start software or open a file. There is a program menu that has all your software. And there are programs avaliable to do anything you could imagine.

If you are interested, go to http://www.ubuntu.com and download the CD, burn it, and boot to it. It will give you a "Live CD" version of the OS that won't mess with your current setup unless you click "install". Its a good way to see what I'm talking about without risking what your used to.
