Engine Guard

#1 Unread post by Hadria »

Question from a newbie… I’m planning on getting an engine guard for my XL883L Sportster. Are they easy to self-install?

This will be my first add-on. I’m planning on using HD parts… Wasn’t sure if I had to have this installed at the shop or if I can do this myself with a limited amount of tools…

I just put on the crash brs/engine gard for my sporty 1200C myself. There was only one type to choose from (for '04 plus models) in the HD Catalog (Part number 49060-04 chrome or 49215-07 black). I got them on myself, only 4 bolts, but you'll need a socket wrench to get 'em good and tight!
And with in an hour of putting them on I found out how well they work! Layed her down in the driveway and barely scratched the gaurd and a tiny spot on the pipe...

Just thought I would mention There is no such thing as a "Crash Bar" they are called Hi Way bars on Harleys and Engine guards on most other bikes. This is how they are listed in parts books and most catalogues.

And the only ones that fit a 04 and up are only avail. from the Motor Company. For 03 and earlier there are several aftermarket ones avail.

I put the Lindby Bar on my 1200C with forward controls. No big deal, and very nice. Then I put some highway pegs on it, and hung some H-D fog lights.
