How to paint a bike on the cheap

#1 Unread post by jonnythan »

I need to paint a gas tank.

Any tips, links, or specific recommendations on paints to buy?

Here is one such thing I've seen on the interwebs:

I also, somewhere, saw an article about a guy who did an entire care with a rattle-can, including a racing stripe that had a shine just like a showroom finnish. I'll see if i can't find it.

I guess theres quite a debate on the moto forums about how it will hold up to age, abuse, fuel, and other things. My take on it would be, its gonna cost probably less than 25 bucks to paint a tank. If it doesn't hold up, you can always redo it an dyour only out time and 25 bucks.

I painted my Concours with Rust-oleum Textured paint for Plastic (black) last spring. It's held up well.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

I Mad-maxed my bike out with some flat black Krylon from a spray can. Still a work in progress, but flat black is ultra forgiving to work with. I put a matte clear coat on the tank, and it has laughed off the odd errant drip of gas.

I have made the decision to try the rustoleum paint job on my tank. I bought everything except the sandpaper and the paint. I'll keep you all posted.

Not a Monster: too many cylinders in the pictured bike.
