So I bit the bullet and purchased a bike!
After 3-4 weeks of research, MSF enrollment (gotta wait a couple months to take it, classes are booked friggin solid), and countless hours of reading forums, articles and e-books, I had decided to go to the dealership on sit on the bikes I was interested in.
The ones I was looking at were the 250R, GS500, and 650R. I had been looking online for used bikes, and found that the prices on them are damn near the same as they are new/last years model. I decided to go against the grain, and buy something new. Im a huge fan of warranties, and I'm not all that educated in motorcycle repair, so I figured this decision probably isn't too bad.
The prices of the 250R, GS500 and 650R were $4,000 $5,000 and $6,000 respectively. I sat on each one of them and they all felt pretty good. Then I though to myself "felt good compared to what?", and I did something that really gave me some point of view, and I suggest to all other new buyers. Even if you know you are never going to touch that ZX-10, or an R1, go ahead and sit on them. You will then REALLY see what people are talking about in regards to comfort, and seating position. On the smaller bikes I was looking at you are situated in a much more standard position, as opposed to these super sports where you are sitting very agressively. Again, this gave me some great perspective, even though I had no intention on buying these beasts. You never really know until you sit in them.
After sitting on the bikes, reviewing in my mind what I had read, talking to the dealer, and discussing my situation, I decided on the 650R. This is not a 600cc supersport, but realistically more of a sport/tourer. I liked how it felt, and had read very good things about it for beginners.
So that was that. Did the paper work, and the bike is being built. But that's not the end of the bank account thrashing. I still had to buy gear. I'll let you know about that in another post, as this one is already getting way too long.
RIP Bank Account.
Mmm, well Hyosung has a 650R too (which is very nice by the by, at least the styling, I don't know about the performance).
Anyhow congrats, happy bike day, and most importantly:
Post pictures when you get it!

The 650R is a great scoot. I borrowed a friends for a day in the mountains and loved the feel of the inline twin.
If you don't want to destroy the bank account right away. New enough.com has a new $40 jacket on sale in addition to plenty of other great deals. You can get all geared up for under $400
Awesome, thanks for all the input on gear. I'll be looking into those sites and seeing what I can get. I'm also looking into getting a pair of R&G frame sliders, but I live in Canada, and most places I've looked into have some pretty silly shipping fees to go international.
Does anyone know a good supplier for these for Canadians, or should I ask my dealership if they can get me any.
