Need Advice for getting started

Hello everyone. I have recently gotten very interested in getting myself a bike, but I have no idea where to start. I live in Alabama, so I'm guessing the first thing would be to get a motorcycle license??? I've ridden a bike 3 or 4 times in my life...never actually driven one though. Are there classes to teach that? LOL. What about the safety course???? Like I said, I've just started the process, I guess you could call it, so any help would be much appreciated!

A great place to learn the basics is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation "Basic Rider Course". You should be able to find a class in your area. They teach a basic curriculum that is geared for someone with your level of experience.

As was stated, the Stickies at the top of the New Bikers Forum are full of information, and I highly encourage you to read them. You've found a great web resource, don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck!

Ben, even if you were an advanced rider, I would recommed a rider class. Reason is most insurances will give a discount if you take a class and the class also teaches you to "look ahead" not just what is happening right in front of you. Take a look at the links section of http://cruiseified.com and you will find several schools to choose from. After that you can worry about the fun stuff like what kind of bike you want.

PS I took the Motorcycle Saftey Foundation course years back and you come out with your license after the 2 day course

Remember, the "process" as you said does take awhile. So, be patient. I know how exciting it is when you start and you want to do everything now, now, now! But it takes many weeks to get through it all.

I've been at this for a little while now.

I wish I found the one with the guy on his Nighthawk 250 for the first time - and crashes it in less than 15 seconds. The guy talking in the video is just classic...

I've been reading a lot of news sites coverage of motorcycle accidents - unfortunately they don't provide enough information in most cases to come to any conclusions on if the accident was preventable or not.

And yes, I do my research. Its led me to second thoughts about getting a motorcycle, but when I go over the statistics from the NHTSA - motorcycling is only slightly more dangerous than riding a car - in particular with the 80% chance of being injured if you are riding a motorcycle in an accident. I may have to write an article on the risks of riding a motorcycle - from a statistical point of view - since I see so many articles out there misusing the data and portraying motorcycling as 'inherently' dangerous.

Have you taken a look at the Hurt Report? It's pretty old now (early 1980's I think) but still useful. There hasn't been another study since as solid methodologically.
