Yup, I'm 45 with a clean record, but as Amuli said, I live in one of the Provinces where insurance is privately controlled
Anyway, as I say, that's the price you pay to play, but I have to tell you, it sure makes you think twice about taking chances that's for sure.

And even so, you'd think that those 3 provinces would have similar insurance rates, but while Saskatchewan has decent numbers, BC and Manitoba's are completely unreasonable. I still don't understand why Manitoba has the highest motorcycle insurance rates in Canada, it's not like it's overly populated, nor does the riding season last longer than anyone else's.

We were having this discussion recently and the rates for bikes here were going from $1200 to $3000, most people in the $1800 range. That's with the full 25% discount for good driving records. When your insurance rate is half the cost of your bike PER YEAR, it's totally not worth it. I haven't even picked up my bike from the dealer's yet and I'm already disheartened.

Great responses

Thanks everyone - for the great responses. At least I don't think the rates I might be charged as unreasonable. You folks up in Canada, though, wow - you really have to be dedicated to ride there.

I picked, "You don't really want to know." Just in case you do, here's the link to the discussion we had on that...

Well, I get a 43% discount, and if I bought all of my insurance through the provincial plan, it would still cost over $2500. It would be $5600+ if I didn't have the discount...

Thank God for those third party insurance companies

Manitoba either needs to lower their rates, or introduce a higher discount. I know they won't reduce them since they JUST went up since last year, but an increased discount would make things more bearable. As mentioned earlier, Manitoba's highest discount is 25%. I want to make a proposition to MPI to raise the bar to 40-50%, but I don't know where to start.
Effective March 1, 2007, Basic insurance rates will be reduced by 3.0 per cent for owners of private passenger vehicles while commercial vehicles and motorcycles will experience an increase of 5.4 per cent and 5.0 per cent respectively.
Isn't that sickening? Their reasoning is so backwards! Most motorcycle accidents are caused by the DRIVER of the CAR being at fault. So why do we have to pay more for their mistakes? MPI says it's because motorcyclist's claims are higher for accidents compared to a car. Even though it's usually the car causing it in the first place? :frusty:

You didn't say whether those amounts were monthly, annual, semi-annual.

Anyway, I'm paying a little less than $150/year, with a $250 deductible. Comprehensive and Collision, on an '01 V-star 650.

is liability alone a good idea or would you also suggest comprehensive and medical coverage?
