ride ideas
Anyone on here from the Calgary area? I'm looking for a good 3 day ride in the mountains starting and ending in Calgary. I live in Saskatchewan and have never rode in the mountains. Any suggestions for rooutes, lodgings, etc. would be much appreciated!!

go to http://www.ama.com and look in the travel area, riders put rides in there and there might be one that you could use, go to your local bike shop and ask around there, try the CAA and ask if they have a scenic route for the area you would like to go to.

Gee, I would have thought that the members in Calgary would have jumped on this chance to show off their favourite local hwys. The Icefield Parkway, (or whatever it's called...) would be a super trip, as would a Fernie, Ainsworth Hot Springs, Banff loop. (You could even ride the ferry across Kootenay lake...)

The Calgarians just need a little time to get to every post!
For a nice 3 day trip head west form Calgary to Revelstoke and turn left towards Nakusp. You will have a nice ride south to the Shelter Bay ferry followed by a 30 minute sprint down to Nakusp. There are a few nice places to stay in Nakusp depending on what you are looking for. If you want a good pub stay in town and check out the nice pub on main street (or the Leland by the lake if you like things a little more rustic....ahem). There is a nice walk along the lake that is really worth checking out if you are there. A nicer place to stay however are the cabins (or camping)north of town at the Nakusp hotsprings (or alternately the small inn at the base of the hotsprings road). These will require a reservation but the hotsprings in particular are my favorite place to stay out there. From Nakusp, head to Kaslo, Nelson, Ainsworth hotsprings, and Creston using any combinations of the roads available (you can't go wrong). If you are planning on camping try Toad Rock Motorcycle Campground just north of Nelson for bikers - (never stayed there but stopped to have a look and they tell me that it is nice). Nelson is a great place to stay but watch out for the "yer-not-from-around-here" types in the pubs as before you know it the whole place can turn ugly - don't ask me how I know
. Heading back to cow town you can take the Cranbrook-Radium- Banff route which is scenic if not twisty (except east of Radium for a ways) or come through the Crowsnest up hwy 22x (scenic but not twisty at all). Watch out for Mounties, they are everywhere. If you are riding in any of these places try to get it shutdown by 4pm if you can help it. The wildlife come out to play on the east side of the mountains around this time and them critters get everywhere that you don't want them to be. There are some pictures in my blog in my signature line below of this nice relaxed ride that I took last year while riding with Mike, Andrea and my wife along these roads. It's always a good time and I try to cover at least parts of this every year. Let me know if I can help you out with any more questions.

I'm not trying to shill for another site, but I have a friend who is putting one together for just such a purpose right now. The site is still in development but he has hundreds of rides he will be adding eventually, although they are predominantly through BC and the western US. Try contacting him through his site and see if he's got anything for the Rockies.
