As for the leathers, I think I saw H-D has kid's leathers but you'll end up spending hundreds of dollars on that. Plus, I've never seen any children's gear at the H-D down the street.

i'm not going to comment on any of the surrounding situations, but to make life easier on the road, get a couple of cheap walkie talkies with headsets so you can talk to each other, if he gets bored, sleepy, starts freaking out, you'll know a lot quicker and be ahead of the situation.

Quick question. Has the child ridden with you for any significant amount of time before? I don't mean quick rides around the neighborhood. I'm talking about 2-3 hour rides.

A six year old tires quickly and coupled with the short attention span I would be very hesitant to attempt a trip of this length. When my son was six a twenty mile trip would have been about the limit.

Do what you will but I would suggest alternate transportation.

Edited to add that getting the little feller geared up will probably add up to near what a rental car would cost.

Riding a motorcycle is dangerous. It's much, much more dangerous than riding in a car. I would not subject my six year old son to that significantly increased danger just to save a few dollars.

We all have different priorities though, I guess.


A cheap rental car is, what, $30 a day plus a few bucks for insurance. It's safer, more comfortable, and cheaper. There is no reason to use the bike on this trip.

Hell if it costs an extra $100.00 in gas for you to take the cage and get the kid there safely I'm sure we can start a collection for ya.

I think you should get a vascetomy so you can't expose any more innocent kids to your thought process or gene pool.

This reminds me of the one call I ever made to CarTalk. I turned to Click and Clack in college to settle an argument my friend and I were having.

My third year at U.Va. I was an RA in a dorm. At the end of fall semester a woman came to pick up her daughter and two friends to take them home to New Jersey. However, just as she pulled up to the building, she picked up a nail in her tire and it went flat. Not to let that bother her she loaded this little ford taurus to the gills, roof rack and all with the girls stuff. If you know college girls you're probably aware that this turned the taurus into a true low rider. However, they still had the problem of the nail in the tire.

Who do they call to get the tire changed? The RA. So I head out, check out the situation and ask where they're going, New Jersey. Charlottesville to New Jersey (I want to say east orange) on a donut tire in the snow knowing that the further they went North the worse it was going to be condition wise. I offered to change the tire on the condition that she swear to stay over night at a hotel in town and get it changed out at a nearby tire shop in the morning.

At the beginning of the next semester I was surprised to hear that they had gotten stranded in the snow on a deserted road, and it took a few hours before another car happened by them and helped them out. I quickly got to the bottom of this story.

Unbeknown to me my friend, the girl's RA, took it upon herself to tell this lady that I was over reacting and that she'd be fine driving for a day or two on this tire. She apparently found this to be sage wisdom and started their trip.

After I found out what happened and told my friend that she was an idiot. She claimed it was a fluke and blamed it on the weather. To settle the arguement we went to cartalk.

After telling the Tappet brothers the story as neutrally as I could with my friend present, I asked "Would it ever be ok to send someone on a trip given these conditions"

Ray didn't waste any time in asking "Now Steven. Before we go any further with this I gotta ask- do I like the guy? Because if not BON VOYAGE!"

In other words. While you're trying to find ways to make this better, I think it still boils down to being a silly idea. However, if you're committed, make sure he's got a helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, boots, rain gear and a way like you mentioned to get strapped in. Also, maybe get a radio set for him to listen to because I guarantee he's going to get bored.

2) I don't believe he's asking for anyone's judgement, he's in a jam and needs info.
