Finally Getting a Bike

Hi everyone.

After four years of talking about and thinking about buying a street bike, it looks like its finally about to happen. I found a 1980 Honda CM400T for sale in Jersey that's in absolutely pristine condition. 5500 miles, new tires just put on, always garaged, adult-owned and ridden and the owner history is completely known - the dealership owner's father owns the bike. He originally wanted to sell it for 1999, but hes lowered it down to 1700 dollars. The bike is all stock, except for little things that worn and were replaced, and it is mechanically sound and cosmetically amazing. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited. My brother has an '07 cbr600rr that scares the sh*t out of me right now, so I'm hoping that learning on this bike will prepare me to move up to a sport bike once I've gotten more skilled.

Also, I have a question for NJ riders. I'm signed up to take the BRC the weekend of June 6-8th. Is it true that I have to have a permit for 20 days before I can actually take the BRC course in New Jersey? I heard rumors about things like this, but I don't know if its true in NJ. Anyone who can clarify this, I would really appreciate it.

You already have a drivers license and aren't in the GDL program, right? (The GDL program confuses me every time I try to figure out the rules.)

Assuming that, the 20 day restriction only applies when taking the road test at a DMV testing facility............ I think. If you go the MSF BRC route, I think you only need a validated permit, i.e. your permit has been stamped that you've passed the state eye and written tests. There's no mention of the 20 day restriction on the state's own MSF page, only on their regular motorcycle license page.

Yeah I'm 21 so I've made it through that whole ridiculous GDL process. Thanks for the responses.

So I bought the 1980 Honda CM400T. It wound up running me 1700 dollars. 5500 miles, all stock and in perfect mechanical and almost flawless cosmetic condition, it seems like I got a great deal. My dad, who has been riding since the 70s and has done tons of his own work on bikes, checked it all out and rode it and what not before we bought it. (We will both be riding the bike).

I'm signed up for the June 6-8th MSF BRC in New Jersey (Brookdale Community College). Insurance on the bike is running us $240 a year, which I certainly can't complain about. I have a nice DOT certified full face helmet from dirt bike riding, so now once I finally get out of school I'm going to shop around for the rest of my gear. In the mean time I got a copy of David Hough's Proficient Motorcycling and have begun reading that.

Two weeks til school ends and even longer til the BRC. I can't wait to get out there and ride!

When I had gotten my permit they told me there was a 20 day period before I could take the class or do the driving test. I don't know if there really was...I got my license well after the 20 day period.

Congrats on the new to you bike. You made a great choice in my humble opinion, the old Honda CM400's are one of the most perfect bikes to learn on.
