I, too, am new here. I've actually checked in to this site on tech tips and reviews for awhile (it comes up on google). I ride whatever I can get my hands on for cheap; that, and a couple nice bikes.
I currently have a 80' Yamaha 400 Special that I plan to caf', and a 97 Sportster Hugger that is kinda caf'd (cam work, rejet, 2 into 1 header, performance air cleaner, fork stabilizer, and stripped of as much chrome as possible). Today I just took delivery on a brand new 07' Honda Shadow VLX deluxe. I thought it felt better than the 750 Shadow Spirit; lower, leaner, and better mpg. The thing handles great, accelerates great, and has plenty of power for my needs. At my age, and experience,
I no longer care to ride fast; get there alive is my motto now.

I started riding over twenty years ago, on a 73' Suzuki 380GT (man I loved that bike). One evening in 1985 I got rearended at a stop light, by a Ford Pinto. Only suffered a few fractures in wrist, hand, foot; and had whiplash, and two severely pulled hamstrings (I landed on my feet, trying to run). My helmet was caved in on one side from landing headfirst on a concrete gas pump island on the other side of the street, and I got a concussion. But the road rash hurt the most. Since then I have owned a 79 Suzuki GS750, a Honda 250 Nighthawk, a Suzuki TC125, a couple of scooters, and now my current stable.

I'm just now getting back to serious riding after a bad accident two summers ago. I hit a utility cut in a street at nearly 40 mph on a 100 cc scooter. The scoot came out okay, but my shoulder was torn completely free of the socket, and rotated 180 degrees so that my hand was pointing behind me. But the road rash was, as usual, the worst. But now that my shoulder has finally rehabilitated, and I can reliably keep a bike upright in case of evasive manuevers, I'm back in the saddle.
"I must break you."

Eeeeyough!! That sounds awful. I'm impressed that you have recuperated and come back to ride. Congratulations!!

I'm a newb, and I find it strange that, occasionally, scooters are singled out as being for wimps or weaklings. Heck, my worst concussion happened while on rollerblades, for cryin' out loud. (Well, technically I was off of them when the concussion occurred. ) Anything speeding along on two wheels is dangerous, especially on pavement. Pavement hurts.
