Computer questions and solutions....thereof...

Alright guys stop worrying about openoffice versus office. It'll just start another Microsoft vs. Linux/Unix debate. Anyway I'm not completely illiterate. Yes I used the open with, yes I set the default to Powerpoint. No it won't open up at ALL without me going into Powerpoint first and then using the file open select file architecture. I know exactly what you're all saying to do and I tried it before I even came on here. Anyway, thanks, I'll try to figure it out next time I go home, since now I'm in Phoenix again.

As for another thing.
Just had motherboard replaced, it fried and got a new one. Now half of my RAM and my wireless card don't show up. Any suggestions?

I did have another though.... do the icons for the ppt files look like ppt files? or the generic icon?


In terms of your MB issue. I'd just make sure the ram is in the correct slots. Some MBs are picky about that, they have to be in the 2 far left, or 2 far right, or I've even seen ones where you have to skip a slot.. odd.
Is it a white box machine or like a Dell/Gateway/HP/Compaq type?

Alright, well, as for Mom's computer, yes, running Vista. Still can't figure it out. It's got the powerpoint look icon to it, it's got everything associated, I can open it up through an already open window, but it won't shortcut itself to open up.

As for my computer, opened it up, turns out the memory stick was loose, fixed it, computer's back on track. Now I just have to figure out the stupid wireless...

maybe somehow double click and single click got turned off? I have seen it happen before on my wifes computer. took me about 30 min to figure out how to turn it back on.

Did you check out the registry at all? I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that stayed the same.

I am on third mouse....for this system I have. I really liked the older old one that I had with my IBM Windows 98 system.....never gave me any problems whatsoever...

The one that came with this system sucked. I purchased a new cordless one and it is mediocre. I then purchased a corded laser mouse, but it's not so great....I am currently back to using my 2nd cordless mouse.

Anyway......I want to go get a new mouse......what are any recommendations for a mouse that does what you need it to do when you make the first click......

Personally I can't stand them, but a lot of people love having trackballs... Might want to look into those. I use a logitech S510 cordless keyboard and mouse and have since Christmas of 05. Haven't failed me yet! Best part is that they're very good on batteries, I am always on the computer, I think I've replaced the mouse batteries three times and the keyboard batteries twice...

But it has to be the type you roll ball using your fingers, not the type with a thumb activated ball offset to the side.

I had an old Logitech basic, 2 button/no scrollwheel, fingerball mouse for years, until it died about 2 years ago. I looked for almost a year for a replacement, but all I could find was the thumb-type. I bought one of those and I hate it, my middle finger is much more accurate and sensitive.... I know several ladies who will verify that.

I finally found a new Logitech cordless, 5 button, scrollwheel thumball mouse in a computer store that was selling off and closing down. I've since seen the same mouse in Staples and I am thinking of buying one and putting it in a drawer for when the one I'm using bite's the weenie. I've been forced to use a traditional mouse a few times here and there, and I hate them the most.

Blues it all depends on what you plan on doing with it. For me I like the Razer mice as they are fast, reliable, extremely sensitive and easy to setup. however I game on my machine and I like to just barely move my wrist on the mouse pad instead of a mile like you do with a ball mouse or a not so sensitive optical mouse. My wife cant stand my mouse because its so fast but I think its because shes used to her crappy microsoft one. If you dont do any gaming a normal logitech optical mouse should be just fine. Dont get a ball mouse because they are old, obsolete, and I hated getting "dirty balls" (quit thinking dirty guys).

Just so you know normal ball mice are 400dpi. My mouse is 2000dpi.

I use a Logitech Mx310 which is a 5 button, scrolling, wired mouse. They run about $32.00 to $35.00 when you can find them. I bought a couple. I like it because I can program the fourth and fifth buttons for Backspace and Page Down.
