My $0.02: if you don't drive a manual transmission, getting a few minutes of practice in a parking lot with a motorcycle might not be a bad idea. Not a lot of time, just enough to be able to start/stop the engine and use the clutch to get going slowly in first gear. Once you have these basics down you will be able to do well in the class.

If you spend a lot of time in a parking lot under instruction of a friend or family member, you'll probably learn a few bad habits your instructors will need to fix. It's easier to teach things correctly the first time.
