1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxima Shifting Problems

#1 Unread post by schooney »

I have a 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxima. The problem is that i can not get it to shift past second gear. How hard is it to take the tranny apart and fix on this bike? Also anything else I should be aware of if I do take it apart?

Thanks,
Clay

It's a big job. You're going to have to tear down the engine and split the case. The most common cause of that problem is a bent shift fork.

You should have a good shop manual, or at the very least, a detailed aftermarket repair manual (Clymer, Haynes), that will give you a step by step procedure for disassembly and troubleshooting.

BTW - Nissan makes Maximas. Yamaha made Maxims. (Nice bikes!)

Thanks flynrider for the advice. Will look into a manual for the bike.

On my XJ 750 you did not have to tear down the whole engine to get to the tranny. The bottom of the engine split horizontally and you can get to the trans without touching the top end. Not sure if it is the same for an 82, mine was an 87.
