Noob question

Hi all - long time passenger just picked up his first bike - a Yamaha Virago 700 - and have a goofy question on the shifting pattern. For some reason, I'm thinking it's one down, three up, would that be accurate? And are all bikes that pattern?

I believe all Viragos have 5 gears and are 1 down, four up.
