I may be getting my bike this week. I have been getting the run around from two different dealerships..but that's another story. Anyways, I won't be riding on the street until after the msf. Even after the msf, I plan to ride in parking lots for at least a month, but I have a question.
I live in a commercial suburb setting, and I would have to go through busy intersections in order to get to work. There is one specifically that is a high accident area.
So I took the back roads today in my car in order to see if their was an alternate route. The route I took was low in traffic, but it had multiple hidden driveways(even a sign on the street saying so) and I'm cautious about morning drivers backing out and not seeing me.
I need some advice on which route would be better to tackle.
Which route would you take?

I'm no authority on this - but I do know my own experience and I do ride through several areas that I consider very dangerous.Bravehearted wrote:I may be getting my bike this week. I ride to work the roads I drive to work - I've been driving them for a very long time and I know them very well. Unless there is an incredibly lower chance of an accident routing another way - I'll go the way I know - at least in terms of commuting.
I'd just be extra paranoid on those intersections that I know are dangerous.
Edit:
I would recommend riding the route a couple of times on off times to get used to road conditions and the amount of lean you'll need to do on things like ramps. I find that even now I take ramps slower than most cars - but faster than the marked speed recommendation. This can be annoying - to the point that I got passed on the right by a impatient commuter - so they could wait in line to pay the toll at the turnpike.

Great advice and trust me I am. I was telling my gf, they are both dangerous routes, which is why I will be practicing in the parking lots and just driving to work until I get some experience under my belt.
I'm going to take the other route to work to get more familiar with it. It's just that the normal route is extremely tricky because it is the most busy exit within about a 30 mile stretch.
I'm not even coming off the highway, I'm actually 5 min from my job. It's the traffic from the off ramp that makes things interesting. I've read hough's book as well as the msf satefy book and I have some great tools for different situations, but I want to think about this stuff before I ever have to do it.
