I just wanted to share about my bike. But feel free to offer advice. I take all I can get.
My husband bought us a 1982 Honda cb650. It has 7000 miles on it and that last time it was registered was 1984. We didn't pay a lot for it, but it was a good purchase because it run in spite of all of that. We took it in and had to replace the gas tank because it had been sealed but rusted anyway. We got that off of ebay. The carberator (I'm sure that's spelled wrong) had to be redone. And of course, we needed tires and a tune up. It looks like we might need a new battery, which no one thought of because it did turn on. And the rear turn signal bulbs need to be replaced.
But I love it! It really feels like a good fit (which is great considering that my husband bought it without me getting a chance to sit on it). I think he wanted a bike because he wanted one and used gas prices to try to convince me, but I really didn't need that much convincing. I've always loved riding and now I love driving (though I'm not on the road yet...still in the parking lot and yard.)
So that's been my experience so far. I guess I just really lucked out with him choosing one and it having so few problems for having sat so long and such.
It was meant to be.

Congratulations!
Your story sounds similar to mine. I just got my first bike, which is a 1985 Suzuki GS450L. It has only 3200 miles one it; fortunately had been winterized properly and run a few hundred miles each season, so it doesn't appear that too many things have deteriorated. I need some new tires and a tune up, but the battery is new and everything looks pretty much new.
And the "save on gas" routine worked on my wife, too!
But I'm holding off until next season before she gets on the back--want to make sure I can get myself safely around before I have to worry about a second body on board.
Thanks for sharing,
