Time to haggle with the dealer

#1 Unread post by Talus2112 »

Okay guys- it is getting close to deal time. I have been lurking on several different forums and contributed to some with questions. And I appreciate everyone’s help. I am taking the MSF September 5th and will most likely buy about 2 weeks afterward.
I am looking at midweight cruisers and recognize the fact that selection might be limited due to demand but I am seeking some general advice on haggling with motorcycle shops.

General advice:
I see many people haggle the OTD price. I would love to see what the invoice is on the bikes listed below. Any locations to get invoicing prices are appreciated.

1) What is the normal prep fee?
2) What is a normal destination charge?
3) What other dealer fees might try to sneak into the price?
4) I am assuming I can haggle for accessories. Is it fair to ask for 1 free item (helmet) or should I try to get a blanket 20% discount on multiple items (helmet, jacket, gloves, etc)?
5) Can I bargain for a tubed-tire to be converted to tubeless? Should I pay for this on a new bike?
6) Can you bargain future servicing? I know that dealers give a maintenance service at 500 miles. Can I get vouchers for one or two more maintenances services for future use?
7) If a dealer is getting a desired bike from another dealer located 200 miles away, do I pay any shipping for this?
8) Should I insist on delivery of the bike to my house? (circumstances limit my riding the bike home due to inexperience- expressways, ghetto locations, etc.)

Based on my research and background, the bikes I am looking at (in order of most desired):

1- Suzuki M50
2- Kawasaki Vulcan 900 custom
3- Honda Shadow 750C2
4- Yamaha VStar 650 Custom

The M50 and V900 are in high demand and beggars can’t be choosers, but I will be slightly picky about color. I am willing to wait a couple of months if the appropriate color can be found. If I see that this can’t be done, I will scrap the idea of trying to get a particular color.

Thank you for all advice! ( I will post this on several forums so I apologize for any redundancy for those that view multiple forums.)

You may notice that dealers will not come down in price because of the high demand. Start shopping now! Go to a few dealers and talk to them. They will tell you what all the up-charges are and you can get a feel for where they will give in. You will also get a feel for which ones are there for you, and the ones that are there to make a quick buck.

Some dealers will offer a discount for a limited time on future purchases on gear. You may try stretching that out because you will probably buy more gear as the seasons change.

Remember also that you are going to be taking your bike back to the dealer for some, if not all of the services on it. So you want to make sure that you are dealing with an establishment that you trust.

:humm: Why do you want to convert tubed tires to tubeless?
