Helmets
Helmets
I have been looking at the "modular helmets" (the type that the front hinges up with the use of a single button on the chin piece". I know they are not ANSI approved, but seem to be a good feature. Has anyone used one, and what at the pros and cons vs. the regular full face helmets?

I own one, but have not used it (on a bike) yet.
My flip-up, flip-face, whatever, is a HJC Sy-max (or is it sys-max).
It IS DOT approved, but I am not sure about Snell.
Flip-ups are noisier than a full-face.
The full face makes it easier to talk to someone when not moving, and is MUCH easier on my glasses. (Yes, I have worn it - breaking it in (seating it) before the class.)
For me, it was the only helmet to fit me up to and including several Arai models. I think I have an odd face. (no jokes, please).
It has pockets by the ears for headphone or the supplied noise reducing padding. The visor has a really stiff last click, to keep it open 1/4 inch while riding if you like.

I am not sure why it would be noiser? I don't like full face, but it does give better protection. I have contacted SNELL on the phone, and they haven't done enough studies on it in ordeer to approve them. I think I would like the idea of being able to open it to talk and also when stopping for a short time.
My husband has had the HJC Symax and bought one of the regular HJC full face helmets because he thought the full face would be more quiet than the flip. After using both he says there is not a huge difference in the noise level of the two helmets. He was very surprised and disappointed at that realization.

Re: Helmet
My Nolan has a chin dam that I can use when it gets colder. It does help with the wind noise somewhat too, although I do take it out in the warmer months. My Nolan does have a quick release buckle that I love! It's a great helmet if it fits your head.rgsp1 wrote:Does the flip-up have a "pad" that can be placed below the chin to prevent wind noise? Does the model you have have a "quick release buckle"? Thanks
