Check out the Hyosung Aqulia, lightweight, value for money cruiser that has had the bike journo's around the world eating their words.
IF, you are going to take the courses then you should have no problem with this bike, easy to handle and more than capable of your highway speeds. I get to ride a lot of cruisers and this is one of the smaller cc jobs that you will not outgrow in a hurry, and in fact may not want to let ot go for a very long time to come. Google some reviews. Good value for money.

I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

I can vouch for the GZ250. I've ridden it at 60-65mph for long-ish stretches (~20 miles) and thought it was fine. The wind factor was a little unsettling at times.
If most of your riding will be spent on the highway, then my thought would be go for a 500-650cc. If most of your riding will be town or small roads you would be fine on a 250.
Pros:

Pros:
- Better gas mileage.
- Lighter weight, much easier to handle.
- Flying in the face of the "bigger is better" mentality.

Rider magazine has an article on fuel efficient bikes and the GZ gets only pretty good mileage (67MPG). A faster Ninja 250 gets more and the Honda Shadow Aero gets 59 MPG. The only thing is that the GZ is good at is its turning since it can be really precise and I remember how my GZ was. I spent 250 miles straight with it once and man did I get tired from all the engine buzzing and headwinds.roncg41677 wrote:I can vouch for the GZ250. Pros:I've been very happy with my GZ thus far. I may move up someday, but I'm having way too much fun to care right now

Now that I think about it the V-Star 650 made it into Rider's list of fuel efficient bikes but not the Vulcan 500 which nets 48 - 52 compared to the V-star's 44. Even the Vulcan 900 can do better. Then again there are already enough Kawasaki bikes on the list.

Huh. My Vstar 650 gets about 50-55 mpg, and that's with two newbies doing a lot of slow-speed maneuvers and clutching. Now that I think about it the V-Star 650 made it into Rider's list of fuel efficient bikes but not the Vulcan 500 which nets 48 - 52 compared to the V-star's 44.

Cool! I'm going to try to go to that one as well! It'll be the one time I can sit on a bunch of bikes and figure out what my next bike will be - assuming my wife will let me get one.kuz wrote:Im in New York, the show is at the Javitts center in the city. Im looking for the cruiser/standard style because I feel more comfortable on the bike. I've done enough things to bang myself up without a bike that the forward posture would set my back and neck off after riding a while. Definitely going to sit on everything though before I buy.
But I broke through some of the ice last night. She said here is no way I'm buying one this year! (leaves the future open, not never buy a bike in the future)

Wow that looks nice for a 250 cruiser.JC Viper wrote:Rider magazine has an article on fuel efficient bikes and the GZ gets only pretty good mileage (67MPG). Ninja 250
Well, for a starter bike, I like my Ninja 250 a lot. I've put 4200 miles on it and Bractstone had it before me and he put 2100 miles on it. There is a used one at my Kawasaki dealer - a 2005 with 2134 miles on it - for $2300. I thought it was funny I was brining in my 2007 with 6300 miles on it for service and here was a bike 2 years older with barely a third as many miles on it.
And then it is even funnier knowing that other people out there put many more miles a year on their bikes than I do. Still, 4K isn't so bad, and I don't intend to stop riding just yet.
Riding in 55 degree weather was actually quite chilly. I'll have to put my liner on.
