Group Rides, What I learned

#1 Unread post by goodies »

I went for my first big group ride yesterday! It was actually a awesome ride. There was about 50-60 bikes, and it was up through the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC almost into VA. It was a very organized ride. A couple of the lead bikes would go ahead and block intersections to let everyone ride through together, etc etc. I loved the experience and learned a ton.

The main thing was that I was glad I was not on mine, the riding is way to intense for a beginner. At first I really wished I was, but after it got going I was very content to experience it 2 up.

The trip back home there was only about 8 of us and was way more relaxing and enjoyable.

It was up to Shatley Springs if anyone from around NC knows the place. It was a great ride, tons of twisties. But again not for a beginner, there was tons of gravel in the road and in the turns. I heard alot of the experienced riders commenting on it. I did notice that alot didn't go back the same way.

Some day......I will be ready. :)

I for some reason have no wish to attend a group ride. Maybe because my wife and me started biking at the same time this past June so there is always company to ride. I'm not too interested in different pressures a group ride is prone to.

What I said does not necessarily mean that you won't see me at an event like that. That's not exactly the type of group ride one thinks of when group rides are discussed. :?

I am a member of the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club. Before I rode with them for the first time a senior member called a Wingman, scheduled a ride for me to go with him. He evaluated my riding in a very nice way(no pressure) and made a couple of suggestions for riding better. The next ride was with a larger group and they put me right behind the road leader. It was a very practical way to learn riding with a group. The group has very positive guidelines about group riding.
