free xj650 with no title?

#1 Unread post by The Blizz »

my unkle can hook me up with a running xj650 for free. he got it off some gypsies a few years ago. never registered it cause it didnt come with a title.

if i were to get the bike how would i aquire a title safely?

when i say safley i mean i dont want to get charged for possesion of stolen property if the bike is stolen and i certainly dont want to get my unkle in trouble either.

so what would i do in order to get a title? where would i go. would i have to track down the last known owner of the bike? what if the bikes title was destroyed? then what?

In GA if the bike is over 15 yrs old, you don't need a title to register, but they still use the vin to see if the bike is stolen.

Title or not, before you do anything, you need to run a vin check w/ the local cops or online and see if the bike was ever reported stolen, then go from there. It would probably be wise to consult a lawyer just in case.

in georgia if you go to get a tag for one that does not have a current tag they make you pay the back taxes owed on it.sometimes this is more than it is worth.

i know my state will let you re-title a bike(buy it salvage and retitle it). but what if you just scrub the vin numbers off everything and claim it was all bought in pieces with no vins on them and you built it and just want a new title?

or how would it work if you had a frame with one vin and a motor with another which do they go by?

most places go by the VIN on the Frame. The motor number is mostly irrelevant for licensing purposes.

if they only use the frame vin then what if you say you frabricated the frame yourself so there is no Vin on your frame?
or if you go to a junkyard find a bike(with a title) and get the vin off that to put on your bikes frame?

as for finding out if it was stolen, you can do vin checks online for a fee, or be honest with the cops if you have no priors and make it clear your willing to give the bike up if it turns out to be stolen i dont think the cops would be hard on you at all. i mean how are you to know if a bike is stolen when its given to you?

a t90? couldnt you try and register that as a moped? it sounds pretty small. and you dont need a title to register a moped. im assuming its a 90cc?
