I called on insurance, and for just 50/100/50 liability (state min is 10/20/10), it's only about 100 for 6 mos. Full coverage w/ a 250 deductible is about 500 for 6 mos for me. That's thru USAA, haven't tried anyone else as USAA is very nice to me.
That was specifically on an '03 BMW 650. If those are more expensive, then I'm glad I priced the 'high' ones.

BMW and Ducati are going to be costly to insure and anything with an R or SX or anything agressive will do the same, especially when 18 - 24 is next to the drivers age.
Serious? Wow. I'm pretty lucky my insurance company just sets a premium based on my age and my bike's current value, regardless of brand or style of bike.
Sport bikes are the most stolen and involved in speeding incidents. High end brands are the most costly to repair in an accident and also stolen.
One thing you can count on: You push a man too far, and sooner or later he'll start pushing back.
Actually, I'd be surprised to hear that BMW motorcycles are frequently stolen.
They're such a "niche" bike. Not a big re-sale/parts market few pricey add ons they're certainly not sexy. I'd think they'd be equivalent in desirability to a Ford sedan.

Being in the city with high rate of accidents and insurance rates the luxury brands are often the most expensive to repair. Sport bikes are just plain stolen or wrecked. Cruisers are safer to these beancounters.

One reason I own boxer BMW. Amazingly simple to work on. Parts can be a bit pricey, but there are a couple used sources for big ticket items, as well as the beemer owner network.
As for finding a good dealer/shop, you might try asking your question on craigslist (Baton Rouge)
