Engine whine

#1 Unread post by Hawking »

I took a couple high speed passes yesterday on my '96 ZX-9. It was running great, never missed a beat, even at an (indicated) 170+ mph.

Today, I took it out for a little cruise around town and noticed a new noise. Sort of a high pitched whine, definately engine related, not transmission.

It sounds very much like a supercharger whine (not turbo), although I can guarantee that the motorcycle gnomes didn't slap a supercharger on the bike while I was sleeping.

Although it sounds damn cool, I'm worried that there something wrong that will bite me an the arse on my way to work at 60mph.

Perhaps cam chain noise, or water pump, or alternator.

Has anyone had a similar problem that might be able to point me in the right direction?

Could be a bad bearing, and there are alot of them on a motorcycle. Check the easy ones first, like wheels, water pump etc.

Good Luck
