My friend called to take his BRC and they said in NY they no longer issue an insurance discout.. or you don't get a discount in NY for taking it now. Anyone else hear of this?

Different insurance companies have different policies.

For instance, in Va progressive has never given a discount but geico will take of 20%

Yeah, in NJ I don't get a discount using progressive. I'm moving to Rider for my next bike. Wayy cheaper.

Let's hope I don't actually have to use it for anything other than the card.

Never got a discount for having taken the BRC (or the ERC) here in MD. Don't get a discount for being an MSF instructor, either... but I haven't asked about that one. I've got Progressive.

I guess I look at it this way: Taking/passing the BRC is an end in itself. If you get an insurance discount for having taken it, that's gravy.

Here in LA, when I called about it, there was a discount. I go thru USAA, but they pass off MC insurance. I *think* it was to progressive. Not sure as I don't actually have the bike yet. ;)

This is 100% WRONG.

The MSF Basic Rider Course, as offered in NY state, includes NY State's Points and Insurance Reduction Program. BY LAW you get the point reduction AND the insurance reduction (each year for three years) on your bike AND your automobiles (we cover windshield wipers, seatbelts, schoolbuses and a bunch of other stuff in the BRC, and these are definitely NOT part of motorcycles. The "defensive driving" course is built into the NYS BRC as offered through MANYS and MSF approved sites in NYS).

Some companies attempt to skirt the program. One major company, who shall remain nameless, used to try the "we already included the discount in your quote" game. Its bullshit.

Talk to the agent. Ask for the discount on the bikes AND the cars. If they won't budge, let them know you will contact NY state Dept of Insurance and file a complaint. We've managed to get the aforementioned company to start honoring the discount...

http://www.ins.state.ny.us/

The discount is part of the PIRP program, and its state law. You can find information on the NYS DMV website as well as the NYS Dept of Insurance Consumer Guide to Buying Auto Insurance

http://www.ins.state.ny.us/auto/2007/auto07.pdf
Check page 19: The company MUST apply the discount to the liability, collision and no fault portions of the coverage. It's not 'negotiable'. It's not an occasional discount. It's not subject to discretion. If they sell auto/bike insurance in NYS, and you complete the course, you get the discount every year for three years. Period.

If you read the 09 manual they have nothing about an insurance reduction anymore.. This is what the MSF told him when he called...

big-ry-ry:

Long story short: I was wrong, you were correct. There will no longer be an insurance benefit. You post prompted me to make some calls, and I've been informed of changes.

For the past decade the MSF Basic Rider Course has been offered in NY under the sponsorship of the Motorcycle Assoc of NY State. When offered in NY the courses included NY's Points and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) so riders were supposed to get the insurance discount. Many insurers played games with riders, trying not to honor the discount. I had assumed (erroneously) that this was the issue here. A great many insurers attempted to feed riders a bunch of bull.......

The issue you brought up is something new, brought on by changes in NY. MANYS just recently lost the contract with DMV. MANYS will NOT be the sponsor in NYS. Instead, MSF will be directly sponsoring the BRC in NY. Changes are afoot. Based on the information I just recieved the PIRP program will no longer be embedded inside the BRC in NY. No PIRP, therefore no insurance discount. That's a bummer. On the other hand, riders in the BRC will no longer need to endure the PIRP info, and will now have more seat time on the bikes............... This is good. I think the rationale may be this: There are lots of places to get the PIRP info (defensive driving). It does not need to be embedded in the BRC. Lets just focus on motorcycles......

This information is apparently reliable. Due to the change in sponsorship other changes in how the BRC is administered in NY may also be afoot... What those changes are remains to be seen.
