no spark on my yamaha 650

#1 Unread post by goodcruisin »

You guys havent let me down yet!
dont ask how, but i drove my bike into a very deep ditch with about 2 feet of water in it. pick it up instantly and laid it agaisnt side side and started my 3 mile wet walk home.
got back to it a little over 24hours later, but it had fallen over and was 90 percent under water. got it home drianed the oil, flushed the engine a few times, checked for water in the tank and took the carbs apart.
after all that, i put it back to gether and it started!
didnt seem to want to rev up muck, checked the spark, it was there but reeally weak.
left it alone for a few days till i had a chance to get a few parts from mikesxs.com (broke the front turn signals getting it out of that damn ravine)
got my parts tried to start it, but no luck.
checked the spark agian, nothing.
anybody have any ideas?
going nuts not being able to cruise

well, youre not getting spark, so lets start with those parts. could be your coil..if it were submerged, id say its alikely culprit. if you have a manual, there will probably be steps to test it..you need a multimeter to check the resistance from certain points, and that will tell you if its good or not. just hope no water got into your alternator! good luck, keep us informed

Pop off the ignition cover on the engine and check to make sure it's not full of mud, mung, or water. They ussually have vent holes in them and will fill up if submerged. While it's off, hose the ignition down good with some WD40 or other water displacer.

Coils *should* be sealed and water-tight..... but it is amazing how many will function properly with that integrity compromised.... untill you store it underwater for a day or so  .
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

I pretty much did what you said the day i pulled it out. today i pulled the battery and made it sure it had a good charge, meanwhile, went through every plug and unplugged then clean the terminals. werent to bad, but a couple of corrosion spot.
put it back together, boom........... fire right up.
but.......... it wont go above idle.
give it a little gas and it sounds like its bogging or poor spark
checked the spark, decent, but not the little blue kernel the book says i should have. but i think itll work.
do i yank the carbs off and go through them, or suspect electrical.
the battery was showing a charge of more than 14v!

well, if youre not getting the right spark, even as the book says you should be getting, sure it'll work...but only as good as you described. :P as long as you flushed out your carburetors with a petroleum based product, you should be ok with them.

you mentioned your alternator charging at over 14V...you made it sound as if this was something new/irregular...seems a bit high for a bike to me...so if this IS new..you might want to check your alternator..pop off the cover to it and check to see how its lookin...good chance something was shorted. not 100% on how it could affect how much spark your getting, but im sure a more experienced biker could tell you more. check all your connections with your coil, make sure no mud got in there, and that water hasnt corroded them.

the alternator was reading around 13.4v before but only getting 12.3 to the battery, after cleaning terminals and such, its now over 14! thats what my book says it should be, so ill live with that..
trying to decide if its a fuel thing or coil thing?

wait!! what do you mean the alternator was reading 13.4v?!!! I dont want to be the dork telling you to do stuff right... but you should NOT NOT take a multimeter or for that matter check any high tension/current electricals with the engine running.
