Just in case people think Harley is the only one facing difficult times, Yamaha is predicting its first loss since 1984... a 22% worldwide drop in motorcycle sales

There have been a few articles on this lately. I'm not sure why Yamaha suffer's losses like this when Honda - should be in a similar position isn't posting anything like this.

Except for the rainbows that come out of Honda's tailpipes - I can't tell what the difference is...

Maybe Honda's turn will come when they have to post their profits for the year or something.

I think every manufacturer is going to have their turn soon, unfortunately. The only two wheeled industries that might see an increase in sales are the ones that manufacture scooters.

Remember, for every one motorcycle Honda sells in the US, they or their affiliates/subsidiaries (e.g. HeroHonda) must sell 100 small-displacement motorcycles in Asia.

The Indian guys here at work think we're crazy for the amount of money we spend on our bikes... And how big they are. I suspect you may be at least partially correct in that assessment.

Also, in India, apparently no outside India manufacturers can operate without partnering with a local manufacturer. Or at least they said something to that effect. Anyway, this might mean that not 100% of the profit might not go to Honda in India anyway.

I recently purchased a new (new for me) bike and was hoping to get most of my money back by selling my old bike. I have had it posted on CL for about 2 weeks for 3,200, a decent price for my VLX. I have had 2 calls about it, once guy never actually came to look at it and the other guy offered 2,000. With that being said, I can understand how actual new bike sales can be taking a hit.

Group profits for 2008 dropped about 95 per cent, but remained positive, the company says.

Dang! I'm no business person, but that sounds terrible.

Almost all motorcycle companies are in the same boat, maybe not 22% but pretty close. I wonder if its the same with auto sales though as super-luxury cars are not really taking huge hit. Obviously total sales are way down, but does anyone know if super-bikes or high end cruiser sales are dipping?

Well, if the new Indian company does well with their $35K bikes, we'll know the high end market is still intact. Personally I'm not betting either way..

I've got $20 that says they won't be here two years from now
