Take a flash light, look in the tank for rust.
check the whole motor out, looking for un-explained oil stains...

Questions...

How often did he change the oil
What type of riding?
Any stunting?

Pay your parent's friend, if you must, but TAKE HIM WITH YOU! I miss stuff looking at a bike that my shop friends notice from 10 yards away. Nothing beats experience and a practiced eye.

Good Luck.

Um, MSF right?

Please don't take this as me trying to start another topic in a thread, mods feel free to delete if it does, but I was considering purchasing a used ninja 250 as well. Since I know very little about bikes, even a ninja used for two grand sounds awesome, but if it needs repairs it could be pricey. With a brand new one selling for 3700, would it really be that bad of an idea to buy a new one that is guaranteed to have nothing wrong with it?

Yes, I'm taking the MSF course either two weekends from now or sometime in April.

papperclippy, I have considered that as well. I've decided to go with getting a used bike that's in good condition, and I'd advise you to do the same. However, I have little experience, so if someone more knowledgeable than I tells you otherwise, listen to him/her.
